How to Get a Temporary ECNR

ECNR stands for Emigration Check Not Required. This item is stamped on the passport of an Indian national allowing them out of the country for temporary employment and is only valid for one trip. An ECNR is needed for passports endorsed with Emigration Check Required (ECR). The process of applying for ECNR is simple and is only needed when traveling to certain countries.

Instructions

    • 1

Have a valid passport in English and a current employment Visa for the country where you're headed to begin work.

    • 2

Fill out Form 2 "Application for Miscellaneous Services on Indian Passports". Review the requirements for receiving ECNR clearance on page six of the application form.

    • 3

Find the correct category. PAN card holders and professional degree holders are in the categories qualifying for ECNR. Complete the form in black or blue ink and enclose the requested photo.

    • 4

Gather proof necessary to gain ECNR. This includes two attested photocopies showing proof of ECNR is met. Verify proof of address with copy of utility bill or bank statement including name and permanent address.

    • 5

Pepare two photocopies of first and last four pages of your passport as required. Attach all information to Form 2.

    • 6

Visit Protector of Emigrants (POE). Several regional offices are located in India. Carry the completed form, attached documents and all originals of these documents (see Resources).

    • 7

Present your proof that you're required to receive ECNR and cover the fee. Get the receipt and come back at a specific time to allow the information to be checked and verified, usually the next day.

    • 8

Return at appointed time and collect your passport, which should now include the ECNR stamp.
