How to Find Pet-Friendly Resorts

Vacations should not be limited to man alone. Consider taking your beloved furry companion with you on your next resort vacation. It only takes a little time and a little research to find a resort that caters to providing creature comforts for both man and man's best friend.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you would like to go for your great escape. Ask yourself if you want to try something new, such as exploring a cattle ranch, or if you would like to get pampered at a spa.

    • 2

Consider your options. If you chose to stay at a cattle ranch, try the Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana. This resort not only offers lodging in upscale and elegant vacation homes and activities such as fly-fishing and taking part in cattle drives, but they cater to your pet. They will provide water and food bowls and a bed in an "outdoor kennel." If you opted for pampering, try the FireSky Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona. FireSky offers guest rooms with pet beds, water and food bowls and will even provide dog sitting and walking services while you are enjoying your spa treatments.

Do your research. Next time you're at the dog park, ask a fellow dog lover where they like to stay when traveling with their pets. Consult your veterinarian for lodging advice or go online to sites such as "Modern Dog Magazine.com" or "BringFido.com." The former has informative articles filled with helpful advice while the latter covers all aspects of pet-friendly destinations such from lodging options to restaurants. Investigate the resort's surrounding area. If the resort doesn't provide dog walking or sitting services, see if a local company does or if there is a reputable kennel that can watch your pet for you. Find areas where you can walk your dog and restaurants that are dog-friendly. Also, find which area stores carry your pet's favorite food and treats. You may also want to research specialty pet boutiques so that you can buy Fido a souvenir of his vacation.

Consult the resort directly. The last thing you want is to find out that the resort doesn't accept pets or won't accept your pet. Call or email the resort and ask about their pet policies. Ask if the resort has a limit on the number of pets allowed in a room, if pets are only allowed in certain rooms, if the pet can be left alone in the room and what size pets are allowed in the room. Some resorts may have weight and breed restrictions, meaning that pets over a certain weight limit or of a certain breed aren't allowed. Remember to budget for any extra pet-related fees.

Pack accordingly. Bring your pet's up-to-date vaccination record, leash, collar, waste collection bags, identification tags, food, water and food bowls and, if needed, their medication. You may also want to bring their dog bed and kennel. Remember to bring their favorite items so that trip is enjoyable for them as it is for you.
