The idea to develop Hilton Head as a resort town took shape in 1956 when Charles Fraser, son of one of the island's landowners, began to implemented ideas to transform it into a residential and vacation area.
Winter temperatures in Hilton Head are warm enough to enjoy daytime outdoor activities, but temperatures can drop into the 30s by evening. The average high temperature in December is 61 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low is 42 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Hilton Head Island.
At 42 square miles, Hilton Head Island is one of the largest barrier islands on the East Coast. It is located 90 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina, and 40 miles north of Savannah, Georgia. Typical low country topography---such as marshes, lagoon, creeks, magnolias and pine trees---can be found there.
December visitors to Hilton Head may still enjoy nature cruises, golf and tennis. Ocean swimming may be limited, as the average water temperature is 54 degrees in December. Holiday festivals and shows are common during this time of year.
