Cabin Rental Checklist

A weekend getaway or a weeklong rest-and-relaxation at a rental cabin is an excellent way to melt stress and remove yourself from the daily grind. Before departing on your adventure, be sure to have everything you will need for an exciting and enjoyable vacation. Remember that renting a cabin is much different than staying at a hotel in a big city, and additional items are needed to make your stay comfortable.
  1. Toiletries

    • Cabins are typically tucked away in remote locations off gravel or dirt roads where the nearest convenience store or gas station is more than a quick trip up the street. Cabins are usually furnished with beds, couches and running water but do not come with additional amenities like soap or floss. Because of this, among other items, be sure to pack toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, a toothbrush, any medications or vitamins. This will ensure your stay is a clean one where you will not be covering your mouth with a towel while speaking to each other after the first night.

    Clothing Requirements

    • As with any trip, pack appropriate clothing. If your cabin vacation will take place during the chilly fall months, remember to pack lots of sweaters, jeans, hats and scarves. On the other hand, if your stay will be during the summer, shorts, T-shirts and a baseball cap or visor are appropriate. Also consider any outdoor activities you are planning to do during your stay. If you will be hiking or horseback riding, remember your boots and day pack. If you will be taking a trip down a river in an inner tube or whitewater rafting, a bathing suit and towels are an excellent idea.

    Food, Utensils, Linens & Safety

    • Before leaving, check with the cabin rental property owners to see if your cabin is furnished with any cooking utensils. If so, you may not need to pack any except specialized tools like an egg poacher or a cast iron pan. You will also need to plan for and pack all of your meals for each day of your stay because you will not be greeted with a stocked pantry. Plan large breakfasts, light lunches and easy, midsize dinners.

Also check with the property owners to see if you need to bring linens or sleeping bags. Be sure to bring enough to keep yourself and your family warm.

Other items that are a must include a first aid kit, miniature fire extinguisher, sunscreen, bug spray and water bottles. These items will be necessary for any outdoor exploring you will partake in and will ensure you have the necessary tools in case of an emergency.
