Kids' Vacation Activities in Texas

If you're looking for a family-friendly vacation, Texas is an excellent choice. The state has a number of zoos, museums, natural attractions and theme parks to keep children occupied. Visit the Alamo or a war museum to learn about history, the space center to discover otherworldly adventures, or Sea World for a fun afternoon.
  1. Museums and zoos

    • The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is a good place to start. More than 300 animals are housed here, representing 100 species. See monkeys, birds and reptiles among other animals.

Or try the Exotic Resort Zoo, a preserve that is home to several endangered species. The zoo's goal is to give the animals a healthy place and give people a chance to learn about the species with a hands-on experience.

In Fredericksburg, visit The National Museum of the Pacific War to learn about Pacific Theater battles of World War II. The museum has about 34,000 square feet of exhibit space featuring Allied and Japanese aircraft. Visitors can also visit the Admiral Nimitz Museum and the Plaza of Presidents.

The Houston Space Center showcases the history of mankind's space travels -- and what's in store for the future exploration of the final frontier. The center has exhibits, special presentations and hands-on experiences. Watch astronauts train, touch a moon rock or land a shuttle.

The Alamo is a standing shrine to liberty. The mission visited today, part of what was once a larger fortress, is home to 300 years of Texas history. The 4.2-acre site near downtown San Antonio also has two other museums, including an exhibit on the Texas Revolution.

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum lets children explore exhibits and artifacts from the long history of the state law enforcement organization.

Visit Harrold's Model Train Museum in Tyler to see more than 1,700 model train pieces and railroad memorabilia. Toy trains are showcased by landscaping, buildings and a circus.

    Theme parks

    • At Sea World Adventure Park in San Antonio, families can enjoy a lineup of more than 25 shows, play at the water park, check out thrill rides or visit marine animals in the 250-acre complex.

Six Flags Over Texas n Arlington features giant roller coasters and gentler rides such as the Mine Train. The park also offers shows and concerts.

    Natural attractions

    • If you want an outdoor experience, visit the X Bar Ranch in Eldorado. It's 7,100 privately owned acres where you can watch for wildlife and enjoy the scenery and sunsets.

Take a tour of the Natural Bridge Caverns outside of San Antonio and learn how to spot gems and minerals.
