Kids' Activities in Sandusky

Sandusky is on the edge of Lake Erie in northern Ohio. It has a rich maritime history. The lake continues to play an important role in the city's life.   1. Cedar Point Amusement Park

    • The home of 17 roller coasters beckons you to test your courage. Try Blue Streak, a traditional wood roller coaster or Magnum XL-200, an all-steel coaster. If you want a twisty, looping ride, go for Mantis, Iron Dragon, Corkscrew or Wicked Twister. For the younger set, try Gemini Jr., Woodstock Express or Wildcat. The youngest visitors may enjoy Red Baron, hot rods and bumper boats. There are many more amusement rides for thrill-seekers of all ages, plus shows, games and a separate water park, Soak City.

    The Merry-Go-Round Museum

    • Zebras, ostriches, bison, camels and even skunks are carousel animals you can see at The Merry-Go-Round Museum. Trace the history of the merry-go-round through exhibits and displays. Watch a professional carver create a new animal in the workshop. Step back in time to ride on the large, old-fashioned carousel with calliope music and colorful lights.

    City Park Fun

    • Watch lake freighters enter Sandusky Bay, picnic and play on the playground at Shoreline Park. Ride, walk or skateboard on Sandusky Bay Pathway along the waterfront. The pathway is 13 miles. A handy starting point is Shoreline Park. Washington Park in downtown has a working floral clock built into a large mound. "The Boy with the Boot" statue in the middle of a fountain is another feature of this park. In the summertime, the old-fashioned The Red Wagon dispenses fresh popcorn as it has since 1910. Stop by the park to take family photos in front of the clock or fountain or purchase a bag of popcorn.

    Maritime Museum of Sandusky and Two Local Lighthouses

    • Swing by the Maritime Museum to learn about the role of boats, ferries, fishing, shipping and shipbuilding on Lake Erie. Unusual exhibits examine ice-harvesting on the lake and how Sandusky's boats helped transport African Americans on the Underground Railroad to freedom in Canada. Afterward, take a short drive to Catawba Island to see Marblehead Lighthouse and Port Clinton Lighthouse.

    Day Trip to Kelleys Island

    • Take a ferry or your own boat from Sandusky to Kelleys Island, part of Lake Erie Islands State Park, for a day trip of picnicking, swimming and adventure. Hike to Inscription Rock, discover Native-American pictographs made centuries ago. Continue to the glacial grooves--long ruts in rock--to witness the glacier movement in this area from prehistoric times.
