According to the City of Oak Harbor, the Parks and Recreation department offers a number of community recreational spots within the city to kids and families. In addition, kids with an interest in sports will find several organized sports leagues from which to choose, including football, Little League baseball and softball, roller hockey and soccer. A running club is also available for local youth.
Facilities for kids at Windjammer Park, also called City Beach, include wading pools, a swimming lagoon with a slide and playground equipment for small children. Baseball fields and basketball and volleyball courts are also available at Windjammer. The community park, located in the downtown area of Oak Harbor on 28.5 acres of land along the waterfront, features a trail where families can hike. Additional facilities for family outings include picnic tables and barbeque pits.
Fort Nugent, an Oak Harbor community park on 40 acres, features a large playground with a number of designated sports venues. Baseball, football and soccer fields are available in the park, along with basketball and volleyball courts. Children can explore walking trails, a natural wetland area and public art displays.
Oak Harbor has an outdoor skate park open daily until dark. The skate park is located behind Volunteer Park on Jerome Street. Bikes are allowed, but supervision of skaters is not provided. An indoor skating rink is available on Barron Drive. This facility offers both public and private party access.
Whidbey Island is home to the Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, which is a good place to teach kids about the history of the settlement of the Pacific Northwest. Historic farms, forts and a lighthouse are part of the reserve in addition to the picturesque scenery and wildlife. Managed by the U.S. National Park Service, the Reserve offers a junior ranger program for kids. As part of the program, children learn how glaciers formed the landscape and the changes made by Native Americans and settlers. Through exploration and hands-on activities, junior ranger candidates learn about nature, conservation and the history of Whidbey Island.
The Whidbey Playhouse, a small community theatre, offers a youth program that not only teaches but also puts on youth performances during the summer months. In addition, the theatre opens auditions to all.
The John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool, part of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District, is open year-round. The indoor facility offers residents instruction in swimming, scuba and kayaking, among other activities.
