Ocala is located in Marion County in northwest Florida. It is known as the "Horse Capital of the World" as the area boasts more than 200 horse farms and training centers, some of which have produced Triple Crown and Kentucky Derby winners. This scenic destination offers a number of fun activities for children.
"Tarzan," "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and numerous National Geographic specials have been filmed at Silver Springs. The park's crystal-clear river and thick, tropical forests allow visitors to experience life as it was 10,000 years ago. Kids can enjoy river cruises, wildlife exhibits, rides and activities throughout the park. The Wild Waters Water Park here showcases a 450,000-gallon pool, a 220-foot-long flume ride and other water rides. The park also has a Tadpole Pool area for toddlers.
Take a horse-and-carriage ride through Ocala's historic streets and past horse farms, where you will see thoroughbreds, Tennessee walkers, Paso Finos and quarter horses, among other horse breeds.
The 34.3-acre Tuscawilla Park provides families with a playground, a half-mile concrete walking trail, six lighted tennis courts, two lighted basketball courts, a racquetball court, a baseball field and shuffleboard. Bring a picnic along on your family day of fun and eat in the park's picnic pavilion area, which is equipped with restrooms.
The Ocala National Forest is situated on 383,000 acres and is the southernmost forest in the continental U.S. The area has more than 600 lakes, rivers and springs, which offer visitors year-round boating, snorkeling and swimming opportunities in crystalline water.
