How to Book Flights in Advance

Air travel is practical, quick and, with proper planning, affordable. Booking flights early often allows you to get the lowest fares on major carriers. Making flight reservations early also allows you to focus on other details of your trip such as packing, ground transportation, hotel reservations and activities at your destination. Airlines often manage their cheapest seats four months before the flight, except for travel during major holidays, which should be booked even earlier.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which dates you are traveling and whether or not you are flexible with these dates. Sometimes, being flexible and willing to travel on certain days of the week can afford you a discount.

    • 2

Find out which airport is closest to your destination. Decide if you want a nonstop flight or you are willing to stop and possibly change planes along the way.

    • 3

Check if there are any extra charges for baggage or special seating, such as in premium areas of the coach cabin or exit rows.

    • 4

Go online to a website such as www.expedia.com, www.kayak.com and enter your destination and travel dates for a list of airlines, times and prices available. You can also check a specific airline's web page. If you are not comfortable booking your flight online, call a travel agency or an airline and an agent will help you book your flight over the phone.

    • 5

Select your departure and return-trip flights if you are purchasing a round-trip ticket.

    • 6

Review the itinerary created by the website, travel agent or airline representative. Pay attention to whether your flights are in the morning or at night. Determine if they leave adequate time for you to get to the airport and that you have sufficient time in between any connecting flights.

    • 7

Find out if your tickets can be refunded or exchanged if your travel plans change, and how much such changes would cost.

    • 8

Accept the itinerary that works best with your travel plans.

    • 9

Select the seats you would like, keeping in mind that exit row seats and certain areas of the plane may have higher rates due to their location. Indicate any special meal preferences, such as vegetarian or diabetic, if your flight offers meal service.

    • 10

Provide your name, address and credit card information to pay for your flight and any other additional fees such as for baggage or special seating.

    • 11

Request a copy of your itinerary and e-tickets to be emailed to you or have it sent to your physical address.
