How to Establish Yourself in a New City

Establishing yourself when moving to a new city is a difficult task, especially if you are not a naturally outgoing person. The ease of it can depend on the reason you are moving and if you will be moving with other people. By taking the appropriate steps, you can successfully establish yourself in a professional manner and make friends along the way.

Instructions

  1. Making Friends

    • 1

Prior to moving, ask friends, acquaintances and coworkers if they know anyone in the area. Use social networks, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to quickly spread the word of your transition to many people. Get in touch with anyone your friends suggest to ask for help when adjusting to the new city.

    • 2

Safely explore the area with a map in hand after moving in. Familiarize yourself with any local stores, museums, markets, parks, libraries, gyms and community centers. Buy local when possible.

    • 3

Join a reading club, sports team or group involving your interests. If you cannot find one that piques your interest, create your own or volunteer for a good cause.

    Establish Yourself Professionally

    • 4

Combat the "new guy" label by going the extra mile at work. Put in extra hours when needed and volunteer yourself for additional tasks.

    • 5

Inquire about the work culture but keep suggested changes to a minimum in order to adapt to the work environment.

    • 6

Go out for lunch or eat with others when possible instead of eating at your desk. Keep to your normally scheduled lunch time and avoid creating a "slacker" image by eating out once or twice a week rather than every day.

    • 7

Remember to be polite, smile and maintain a friendly personality. Be someone your coworkers not only want to work with, but even be friends with.
