Surviving long car rides can be done if planning ahead is part of your travel plans. Keeping the family calm not only makes the time pass quicker, it's safer for the driver.
Make make sure your directions are accurate. Adding on unnecessary travel time due to incomplete or incorrect directions does nothing but cause more aggravation. Many Web sites offer have map links.
Make sure the driver is well-rested before starting out. If leaving at night, a mid-afternoon nap will re-energize the driver. If the morning is when you are planning to depart, a good-night sleep and nourishing breakfast will make the drive easier. If a second driver is in the car, create a driving schedule. Alternating driving stints is a good bet.
Pack food and beverages. Non-perishable snacks like crackers, dried fruit, pretzels, trail mix and dry cereal are good foods that can be snacked on while driving. Bottled water and juice also should be packed. A cooler with sandwiches and fruit is also wise.
Bring activities for children. Coloring books, magnetic games, and even small electronic games will keep the kiddies quiet. Packing foods they like are also helpful. A favorite stuffed animal can be brought to keep them confortable. If you have a dvd player, a new movie is a good idea, that will keep them entertained.
Plan ahead. Being prepared with things to do when you arrive at your destination, sites you see along the way, or discuss highlights from the last family vacation will make the ride more enjoyable.
