Russian Customs Regulations

The custom regulations of a country can play a big role in the success of your vacation or business trip. You need to know, at least generally, what you can or cannot bring, how much money you can carry in and whether you can get into the country at all. This article gives a look at the custom regulations for Russia.
  1. Currency Regulations

    • If the sum of currency being brought into the country exceeds $10,000, then it must be declared in writing upon entering Russia. This includes any combination of foreign currency, traveler's checks, rubles (Russian money) or foreign-certified currencies. You can bring as much money as you desire into the country, you just have to make sure and state it when going through customs.
      Please note credit cards are not counted into this combination of currency.
      When leaving the country, you can not have more than $10,000 of any combination of currency. Also, it is required to declare any amount exceeding $3,000 rubles.

    Importing Foreign Vehicles

    • If you want to bring in a vehicle, these are the guidelines:
      Imported vehicles are allowed for up to six months and all inspections are carried out by customs officials. If you need the vehicle for longer than six months, then registration by the Departments of State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of the Interior of Russia is required.
      Upon importing the vehicle, you must obtain a Certificate of Transport Means Import from customs authorities. If you fail to comply with this, you will be detained and the vehicle impounded. Also, there are no payments of customs duties or taxes for a stay of up to one year.
      You must also present to custom authorities the Compulsory Insurance of Transport Means. These must be for the entire time the car is going to be in Russia.

    Travel into Russia

    • When traveling into Russia, you must declare any of the following items.
      The value of goods you have exceeds 65,000 rubles.
      The total sum of cash on hand is greater than $10,000.
      Have more than 2 liters of alcohol, more than 50 cigars, 100 cigarillos or 200 cigarettes.
      Any sort of weapon of firearm.
      Caviar or sturgeon with a quantity exceeding 250 grams.
      If you must declare any of the objects listed above, you must proceed down the Red corridor. If you do not need to declare anything, you can go down the Green corridor.

    When Leaving Russia

    • When leaving Russia, you must go down the Red corridor if you need to claim any of the items listed below. If you don't need to claim anything, you can proceed down the Green corridor.
      Cash totals exceeding $10,000
      Rubles exceeding $3,000
      Precious jewels or metals of any kind, excluding jewelry
      Weapons and ammunition
      Narcotics
      Cultural valuables such as music instruments, art and antiques
      Poisons or toxic gas
      Nuclear substance
      Wildlife under the threat of extinction
      Caviar or sturgeon in quantities exceeding 250 grams.

    Permits

    • There are some permits you can obtain to allow the export of certain goods.
      Weapons and ammunition can be given a written permit from The Body of Eternal Affairs.
      Cultural valuables can also be given a permit for exportation. The minister of Culture of Russia gives out these permits.
