Croatia Customs Regulations

For foreigners wishing to travel to Croatia, the basic entry document is a valid passport. Visas are not required for American, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand or Irish nationals staying less than 90 days. All visitors require tickets to final destinations, proof of sufficient funds, and adherence to a number of customs regulations prior to entry.
  1. Alcohol and Tobacco

    • The individual allowance for alcohol and tobacco pertains to both imports and exports. It divides alcohol into five categories: strong alcohol (limit of one liter); liqueur, dessert, or sparkling wine (limit of two liters); table wines (limit of two liters); perfumes (limit of 50 g); and cologne (limit of 250 ml). Tobacco is limited to one of four amounts: 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, or 250 g of tobacco.

    Currency

    • All imports and exports must be cleared by customs.

As of July 2010, the local currency is the Croatian Kuna (HRK). An individual may import or export the national currency up to the amount of 15,000 HRK. There is no limit for importing foreign currency, but a report in writing must be filed for amounts more than 40,000 HRK.

    Animals and Plants

    • Pets such as dogs, cats, birds, fishes and hamsters must be imported at specific border crossings where health inspections are performed. The country of export must issue an international health certificate for each animal. Temporary visits with pets are allowed with proof of an international vaccination certificate.

All plants, seeds, organic fertilizers and herbal products must also be imported through specific border crossings where agriculture border inspections are performed. The country of export must issue a phytosantiary certificate for each quantity.

    Weapons and Other Temporary Imports

    • All weapons and ammunition must be reported to the police. Importers must have permits to carry such arms. Automobiles, boats, house trailers, and other means of transportation are allowed for a maximum of six months under a number of conditions. This allowance is primarily used by permanent residents of Croatia.
