Chew or drink something. The act of swallowing allows the ears to open up. Gum or candy is especially useful. Start doing this at the beginning of the flight to increase the chances of popping your ears.

    • 2

Take a nondrowsy decongestant about an hour before the plane lands. Use a nasal spray after you have landed if you have a cold.

    • 3

Breathe in deeply. Close your nose and breathe out slowly and gently. This exercise will also work parts of the middle ear.

    • 4

Yawn. The act of yawning works the middle ear as well. Chances are if you have just returned from a flight you will be tired. Exaggerate this feeling and yawn more than usual.
