Cheap Night Tours in Washington, DC

If you have a good map and a guidebook, you can visit the same attractions as the tours without spending any money. Many memorials, museums and popular sites such as the Capital and White House, don't charge admission fees. In addition, you'll be able to move at your own pace, lingering over the sites that interest you and skipping those that don't. However, if you prefer a knowledgeable guide, these tours range from free to moderately priced.
  1. Memorials by Moonlight

    • Washington Walks operates Memorials by Moonlight, a three-hour tour that starts at 6:30 p.m. almost every night between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This tour stops at many of the major memorials, including the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Abraham Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial. As you approach each memorial, a guide tells its story. You then have time to look around by yourself. Tours run rain or shine, and leave from the Thomas Jefferson Memorial's accessible entrance sign. Most routes are wheelchair-accessible. In 2010, this tour was free and ran through Labor Day. No reservations are necessary. All you need to do is show up. Groups of 25 or more should call in advance.

    Haunted Houses

    • Washington Walks also offers the Most Haunted Houses Tour nightly, through Oct. 31, except for July 4. This two-hour tour leaves from the Farragut West Metrorail station, 17th Street exit, and concentrates around the seven acres of Lafayette Park. You'll see the home of Stephen Decatur, a naval hero of the War of 1812, and hear about Henry Adams and his troubled wife, Clover. The tour ends at The Octagon, the house considered to be the most haunted house in Washington D.C. This walk does not include visits inside any of the buildings. In 2010, the cost was $15 per person. Children 3 and younger were free. No reservations are necessary. Just show up and pay the walk fee in cash when you arrive.
