Why did Americans travel on the Santa Fe trail?
To transport goods The Santa Fe trail was a major trade route between the United States and Mexico. This route was primarily used to transport Missouri goods such as furs, textiles and manufactured goods to New Mexico, where they were traded for Mexican silver, gold, mules and horses. Mexican traders brought these goods along the trail on the way back.
To settle in the Southwest For various reasons, American pioneers decided to travel the Santa Fe Trail and settle in the Southwest. Some, including frontiersmen such as Kit Carson, were attracted by the beautiful landscapes and the potential for adventure. Others, known as "forty-niners," used the route as a way to reach the gold fields in California. Additionally, the area known today as New Mexico was part of the United States after the war against Mexico, leading many settlers to seek fresh opportunities.
