Sights Seen on a River Nile Cruise

The Nile River is over 4,000 miles long and runs through nine African countries. Ancient Egyptians depended on its annual flooding to bring in silt, which made farmland fertile. Many communities grew around the Nile.
  1. Pyramids of Giza

    • One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, pyramids were burial chambers for pharaohs. Pharaoh Khufu built the largest of these 4,500 years ago.

    Temple of Hatshepsut

    • The female Pharaoh, Hatshepsut, ruled Egypt between 1503 and 1482 B.C. and she commissioned this temple found in Deir el-Bahari. Before she took complete control of power, she initially ruled as a co-regent with her stepson.

    Edfu

    • Edfu was once the ancient capital of Upper Egypt and is home to the Temple of Horus built during the Ptolemaic Period between 300 and 30 B.C. Egyptologists consider it to be the best preserved temple in Egypt.

    Temple of Karnak

    • Located two miles north of Luxor, it is the largest temple complex ever built. It is actually made up several temples dedicated to the god Amun. It took 1,300 years to complete.

    Aswan Dam

    • The function of the Aswan Dam is to manipulate the Nile by storing some of its waters in Lake Nasser. During periods of drought, the lake's waters are released. The Dam also generates hydroelectric power.
