Japan implemented various polices aimed at controlling foreign influence and maintaining isolation and stability:
1. Restriction on Foreign Contact:
- Trade was closely regulated and restricted to specific ports, like Nagasaki's Dejima enclave where the Dutch conducted limited business to prevent direct access to the larger Japanese population.
2. Isolation Measures:
- Japanese citizens were prohibited from leaving the country and any returnees faced strict punishment.
- Building of large ships for offshore navigation was also restrained.
3. Expulsion of Foreigners:
- Tokugawa Shoguns gradually imposed restrictive measures that led to the expulsion of Western missionaries by 1638.
