Over 2,400 Suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge Since 1937

Since its opening in 1937, more than 2,400 people have died by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge, making it one of the world's most frequent suicide sites.

Prevention efforts:

  • Suicide deterrent net (completed 2024): Stainless-steel mesh net 6 m (20 ft) below the sidewalks on both sides.
  • Crisis phones connected to 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
  • Patrols by Bridge District staff and CHP.
  • Signage with crisis numbers.

Early data (2024) shows the net significantly reduces fatalities, though some individuals still breach it. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 (US) or your local crisis line.
