New Restaurants in Austin, Texas

Dually ranked among "USA Today's" healthiest cities and GoVeg.com's most vegetarian-friendly cities, the Texas state capital is a cauldron for new health-conscious eateries. In 2010, restaurants specializing in local, seasonal, organic and vegetarian menu items have cropped up in neighborhoods throughout Austin.
  1. Thai Taste

    • Thai Taste opened in June 2010 in Austin's Oak Hill neighborhood. Today, the restuarant serves traditional Thai dishes for lunch and dinner. Fried tofu, edamame and dumplings are only a few of the restaurant's appetizer selections. Thai soups, salads and fried rice are available as complements to entrée noodle dishes like grilled pork noodles, the rice noodle stir-fry dish lad nah and pad Thai, the perennial Thai cuisine favorite. Thai Taste's lunchtime patrons can select among similar menu offerings, in addition to such desserts as the coconut cream cup, fried banana and sticky rice with egg custard.

    Olivia Restaurant

    • Olivia Restaurant serves French and Italian cuisine in Austin's South Lamar area. Within a year of opening, "Bon Appetit" magazine ranked Olivia among the nation's best new restaurants. The restaurant's interior is designed to resemble an art gallery; the menu is equally contemporary and innovative, with dinner menu items changing daily. Escargot skewers, seafood stew and beef carpaccio are only a few of the dinner entrées, many of which are prepared using sustainable ingredients. Olivia also serves brunch, lunch and desserts including duck egg crème brûlée and sorbet. The restaurant also features an extensive wine list that includes red, white and pink wines.

    Somnio's Café

    • Somnio's Café serves organic and vegetarian-friendly fare in the South Congress neighborhood. The restaurant, which opened in 2008, also serves gluten-free and vegan cuisine in an eco-friendly environment. Hummus, seasonal fries and stuffed avocado are all appetizer selections at the café that incorporate local, seasonal and organic ingredients. Sandwiches and wraps are available at Somnio's and include a cheesesteak sandwich that vegetarians can order with portobello mushrooms. Dinner entrées include pasta, vegetable risotto and bison meatloaf, prepared with natural, grass-fed, hormone-free and local meat. Somnio's patrons can order a vegan brownie with toppings for dessert.
