Cruises for Kids in New York

More than 1.6 million children accompanied their parents on kid-catering cruises in 2009, reported Eileen Ogintz, of CNN, in her March 23,2009 article entitled "Cruises a Floating Fun Factory for Kids." The "city that never sleeps" may be renowned for its flashy night life and the adult-oriented shows on and off Broadway, but it also offers plenty of entertainment for its youngest tourists. Family-friendly cruises embarking from New York City harbor offer wide-eyed children the experience of a lifetime while their parents are free to relax and rejuvenate.
  1. Norwegian Cruise Line

    • Offering more than 55 cruises departing from New York City, the Norwegian Cruise Line offers destinations like the Caribbean, Bermuda, Bahamas, Florida and Canada. As the official partner of Nickelodeon, Norwegian caters to its youngest guests with activities involving SpongeBob and Dora. With four breakdowns in age-appropriate clubs (Juniors, First Mates, Navigators and Teens), the NCL amply provides for the entertainment of young people from two to 17. Even the shore trips are geared especially toward families. Receiving a four out of five ranking by guests, its New York City round trip cruises range from the one day-one night trips starting from $164 to the 10-day Canada and New England trip from $799 and the 11-day Miami and Caribbean cruise from $789. (All rates are per person and as of April 2010.)

    MSC

    • The MSC Poesia sails from New York City harbor in September and October, stopping at Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, Quebec, Boston and Newport over the 10- to 13-day excursions. Geared toward family travel, MSC offers adjoining cabins on request and advertises that kids sail for free. With clubs for all levels of children and teens, this cruise line will delight your children with its mini bowling, wii consoles, 4-D cinema, video game arcade, acqua park, outdoor sport center and kids pool. Given mixed ratings by guests, some critics remarked on the in-cabin television offerings inappropriate for children and the alcohol available to teens over 18 because of the server's European policy.
