It might seem a little like a Disneyworld ride, but the Cozumel Atlantis Submarine is a real Coast Guard sub that dives 100 feet to the ocean floor and cruises around the protected marine park of Chankanaab. While the captain negotiates the tricky coral reefs, the co-pilot provides a narrative, identifying the fish and formations you are viewing through the ship's large windows. Children must be 36 inches or taller to board the submarine.

One possibility for exploration is to arrange a private tour of Cozumel's Mayan ruins and neighboring pyramids for up to 14 people. The excursion begins at the Tulum ruins, which will more than likely be crowded, as it is a favorite for cruise ship shore trips. It is possible to elect to have a guided tour of the ruins or simply prowl around on your own, but in either case, you can arrange to be met in a couple of hours and hop in the tour jeeps to head for the ferry at Playa del Carmen. The next stop is Coba, the only place where you can actually climb a Mayan pyramid and take in the breathtaking view of the jungle and the Caribbean sea. The guide speaks both English and Spanish and the tour takes about 10 hours.
