United States passports can be used to prove your identity and allow you to enter the United States. The traditional U.S. passport is an internationally accepted travel document and is used for travel by air, land and sea. The newer U.S. Passport card is a small travel document that can be kept in your wallet and costs less than the traditional U.S. passport. The U.S. Passport Card can be used for travel by land and sea only.
Some states in the U.S. and Canadian provinces have issued Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL) to citizens. The EDL is much like a traditional Driver's License, but also denotes the traveler's identity and citizenship. The EDL can be used only for travel into the United States by land or sea.
The Nexus Card is a card issued to trusted travelers who cross the border from the U.S. to Canada frequently. Commuter lanes are reserved for Nexus cardholders at the border and Nexus kiosks are available at airports, making the re-entry process much faster and simpler. To receive a Nexus card, the citizen must be interviewed and fingerprinted, in addition to paying an application fee.
