Things Required to Get Back Into the U.S. From Canada

Citizens of the United States must have documents confirming their identity and nationality before re-entering the United States from Canada. Knowing what documents are required for re-entry and having those documents ready at the border helps expedite the re-entry process. If you do not have the required documents, check with your local U.S. Postal Service branch or Department of Motor Vehicles. Citizens are responsible for presenting one of the documents for re-entry.
  1. Passport

    • United States passports can be used to prove your identity and allow you to enter the United States. The traditional U.S. passport is an internationally accepted travel document and is used for travel by air, land and sea. The newer U.S. Passport card is a small travel document that can be kept in your wallet and costs less than the traditional U.S. passport. The U.S. Passport Card can be used for travel by land and sea only.

    Enhanced Driver's License

    • Some states in the U.S. and Canadian provinces have issued Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL) to citizens. The EDL is much like a traditional Driver's License, but also denotes the traveler's identity and citizenship. The EDL can be used only for travel into the United States by land or sea.

    Nexus Card

    • The Nexus Card is a card issued to trusted travelers who cross the border from the U.S. to Canada frequently. Commuter lanes are reserved for Nexus cardholders at the border and Nexus kiosks are available at airports, making the re-entry process much faster and simpler. To receive a Nexus card, the citizen must be interviewed and fingerprinted, in addition to paying an application fee.
