Haunted Attractions in Los Angeles & Southern California

The largest city in Southern California, Los Angeles is home to historic hotels and other attractions supposedly haunted by the ghosts of 20th century movie stars. Throughout Southern California, haunted areas include places in San Diego and Long Beach. Some of these haunted places give paranormal tours while others offer haunted rooms in their hotels.
  1. The Queen Mary

    • The Queen Mary has been permanently docked in the Long Beach harbor since December 1967. The ship served during World War II by transporting Winston Churchill and more than 700,000 military personnel. Legend has it that several apparitions have been seen on the Queen Mary, including wet footprints and women swimming in vintage bathing suits in a drained pool. The ship's Ghosts and Legends Show entertains guests with a theatrical recreation of hauntings on the ship. Its Paranormal Shipwalk Tour takes guests to paranormal hot spots on the ship. Tours last about two hours and take place three days a week, departing every evening. The Queen Mary's Dining With the Spirits Attraction takes guests to dinner at Sir Winston's with a haunted tour directly afterward. During dinner a paranormal guide shares stories about the paranormal activity on the ship.

    The Whaley House Museum

    • The Whaley House is located in Old Town San Diego and was purchased by Thomas Whaley in 1855. The house has been through many changes, housing a ballroom, general store and school. Reported ghost sightings include heavy footsteps that some have speculated to belong to Yankee Jim, who was hanged on the property in 1853. Others have reported seeing Anna Whaley on the property's garden and in the downstairs rooms. A young girl in a dress has been reported to haunt the dining room. Private After Hours tours are available to guests and take place after 10 p.m. Admission prices vary and hours vary depending on the season.

    Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

    • This hotel opened in 1927 and was frequented by Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. Located in Hollywood, the 300 rooms at the hotel include the Marilyn Monroe Suite. There have been reports of Montgomery Clift wandering the hall in front of Room 928, where he stayed for three months during a movie production. Employees have also reported shadows on the same floor of 928, and maids have reported someone brushing by them when nobody is there. There has also been a report of a blond woman's reflection being seen in a mirror that once hung in a suite that was used frequently Marilyn Monroe.

    The Alexandria

    • Today, the Alexandria is a place for affordable urban housing. But in the early 20th century, it used to be a meeting place for those in the movie business. It opened in 1906 and has seen guests like Winston Churchill, D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford and King Edward VIII. There have been reports of sightings of a lady in black who wanders the halls.
