Route 10, which runs from Hamden to New Haven, is home to almost all of the city's Chinese restaurants. First in line is New China Garden, a small, family-owned restaurant that caters to students from nearby Quinnipiac University. Fried boneless duck served on a bed of Asian vegetables is a recommended house specialty. Closed on Sundays, New China Garden is open from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m Monday through Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

China Lantern serves traditional favorites such as golden chicken fingers, crab Rangoon and barbecued spare ribs, but the restaurant also has a long list of house specialties including Beijing duck and filet mignon Cantonese style. Head toward New Haven and look for a one-story brick building for one of Dixwell Avenue's Chinese restaurants, Szechuan Delight. A casual, family-friendly restaurant, Szechuan Delight offers two menus, and local diners unanimously recommend ordering from the traditional Chinese list for specialties such as watercress with garlic and sizzling bean curd. The restaurant, which also features a sushi bar, is known for its complimentary dishes of fried noodles that arrive with every entree. Szechuan Delight is a little more expensive that other local Chinese restaurants: The average price for lunch is $11.95, while dinner is generally around $16.95.

Before reaching the New Haven border, check the corner of Dixwell Avenue and Morse Street for Hing Wah, a local restaurant that has been serving Hamden for a couple of generations. The menu features all-day specials such as moo goo gai pan and pork egg foo young for less than $5. House specialties include sub gum wor bar, a dish made with lobster, shrimp, scallops, chicken and pork. Beef with orange sauce is a local favorite.

The final choice for Chinese food in Hamden is easy to miss because of its modest appearance, but Gold Star has been in the area for more than a decade (there is a second location in Wallingford). Affordable and fast, Gold Star receives high marks from local residents, particularly for its take-out.
