The Tallest Bridge Towers in the World

Enormous buildings are the pride of many nations and huge bridges are no exception. Cities like San Francisco and London are famous for their bridges; one even spawned a famous nursery rhyme. We make lists of the longest, the tallest and just about anything else. Then there are monoliths that do all the work, the bridge towers.
  1. The Millau Viaduct Pylon P2

    • France opened the Millau Viaduct in December, 2004. The bridge helps to connect Paris to Montpellier and won the 2006 IABSE outstanding structure award. The bridge spans the Tarn River and pylons P2 and P3 are the highest pylons in the world and P2 boasts as being the world's tallest bridge tower, coming in at 1,130 feet (343 meters).

    Sutong Bridge Main Tower

    • Located in Jiangsu Province, China, the Sutong Bridge, completed in 2009, spans the Chang Jiang Changjiang River. The 306-meter main tower is one of the largest in the world, helping to hold up the eight-kilometer structure. The bridge contains a pair of three-lane highways and helps motorists reduce travel time crossing the river by nearly an hour.

    Eastern Bosporus Strait Bridge

    • As of 2010, the Russians are building a bridge over the Eastern Bosporus Straight, a piece of sea between Russky Island and Vladivostok. It took four straight days to pour the concrete for the 340-meter bridge tower that boasts being one of the largest in the world. More than $1 billion went into the new bridge, one of the world's most complicated construction projects.
