The Moonshine Festival takes place in Dawson County, located in the foothills of the northeastern section of the Georgia mountains.
The festival takes place over three days, typically beginning on the third Friday in October and continuing through Sunday.
Dawsonville is also the birthplace of NASCAR. As a part of the festival, the community holds an automobile road race open to anyone wanting to participate. A section of the festival area is dedicated to the history of the sport and is located near the NASCAR museum.
Festival organizers encourage visitors to take bicycle tours through the mountain foothills on the same paths that moonshine runners traveled during Prohibition.
A car tour takes visitors deeper into the mountains than the bicycle tour on an authentic moonshine run to a working moonshine still deep in the woods. This tour takes place on the first night of the festival.
