Research archaeology and what actually goes on at a dig. Look online and read archaeology magazines.
Join your local archaeological society or club. They can give you information and ideas about local and foreign digs.
Decide if you want to stay local or go abroad. There are archaeological opportunities in every state and overseas.
Think about joining a field school. Field schools are typically attended by university students, but they sometimes allow archaeology club members or other volunteers to help out. Inquire at your local university's archaeology or anthropology department.
Find out about volunteering at a dig. Some digs require you to pay a fee to volunteer, while others are free. School-sponsored digs sometimes offer continuing education credits as a volunteer.
Discover the right dig for you. Research different digs at the Archaeological Institute of America website. Most digs are restricted to age 18 and up, however there are some digs that allow younger people to join.
Contact the dig that interests you to get more information and an application.
