Traditional Desert Transport: The Camel

For millennia, the **dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius)** — the **one-humped "ship of the desert"** — has been the **iconic and indispensable mode of transport** across the **Sahara, Arabian, Thar, and Australian deserts**.

Why Camels Are Perfectly Adapted

• Water Independence: **Can lose 30% body weight (water) safely** (human: 12% fatal). **Drink 100–150 L in 10 min**. **Oval RBCs** flow when dehydrated. **No sweat** until 42°C (107°F). **Dry feces, concentrated urine**.
• Thermal Tolerance: **Body temp fluctuates 34–42°C** (reduces heat gain/sweat). **Thick fur** insulates against solar radiation. **Long legs** keep body above hot sand.
• Sand Mobility: **Broad, splayed, leathery pads** — **float on sand**. **Calloused knees/chest** for kneeling on hot ground.

Caravan Culture
