Take Interstate 90 east from Seattle, and drive across the state of Washington, passing through Spokane.
Cut across the narrow northern section of Idaho and continue through Montana, taking a detour near Billings to visit Yellowstone National Park and enjoy its geothermal wonders.
Continue eastward on I-90, cutting across the northeastern corner of Wyoming and stopping at Mount Rushmore National Park near Rapid City, South Dakota.
Drive across South Dakota, and enjoy side trips to the funky Corn Palace in Mitchell and the legendary Wall Drug in Wall.
Continue on I-90 across southern Minnesota, then curve southward toward Madison, Wisconsin. Stop in Madison to stroll down "museum mile," take a walk through the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, or visit the Henry Vilas Zoo ' admission to the zoo is free!
Leave Madison and head for Chicago. Take a break in Chicago to check out some of its many attractions, including Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs.
Continue east along I-90, passing through Cleveland and driving along the edge of Lake Erie through the northern tip of Pennsylvania.
Stop in Buffalo, New York, for great buffalo wings and a quick detour to Niagara Falls, or perhaps cross the border into Canada near Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario.
Follow I-90 east from Buffalo through Syracuse, Utica and Albany (the state capital), then head straight for Boston. Take a break in Boston to walk the Freedom Trail, which includes Paul Revere's house and the Bunker Hill monument.
Head north on I-95 along the Atlantic coast to Portland. Visit some of the local attractions, have a lobster dinner and a local brew, and relax!
