How to Plan a Road Trip From San Francisco to New York

The nearly 3,000-mile trip from San Francisco to New York will take you across the upper one-third of the country and through the Great Plains. This drive is best in spring or fall, when the weather is mild and you aren't likely to be blasted with snow or ice.

      Take U.S. 101 to I-80 east out of the Bay Area and into Nevada.

      Gamble in Reno or visit the stunning National Automobile Museum with more than 200 antique and classic cars. More cerebral pursuits await at the Fleischmann Planetarium, which presents both planetarium and SkyDome shows.

      Continue on I-80 east to Salt Lake City. Both the capital of Utah and the home of the Mormon church, Salt Lake is also the gateway to Utah's natural wonders. Explore downtown, then head out to This Is the Place State Park, where pioneer history comes alive through live exhibits and docent-led tours.

      Go into Wyoming on I-80. Now you're in cowboy country, and you can view the Wyoming Territorial Prison and Old West Park in Laramie before moving on to the Laramie Plains Museum.

      See the Buffalo Bill State Historical park in North Platte, Nebraska, or choose from a plethora of attractions in Lincoln. There is an excellent children's museum here, or you can tour the Museum of Nebraska History, the Lincoln Zoo or the University of Nebraska State Museum.

      Stop at Iowa's Des Moines Art Center, which has a stunning permanent collection with works by Goya, Matisse, Monet, O'Keeffe and Warhol, as well as a modern sculpture collection. The Des Moines Botanical Center - housed under a geodesic dome - is also an excellent place to spend an afternoon.

      Stay on I-80 to Illinois and Indiana. At South Bend, you'll find the notable College Football Hall of Fame and the Northern Indiana Center for History.

      Continue on I-80 east to Toledo. Stop at the renowned Toledo Museum of Art and the Toledo Zoo.

      Pass through Pennsylvania to New Jersey, then take I-280 to the New Jersey Turnpike.

      Go southwest on the New Jersey Turnpike to the turnpike extension. Follow this to the Holland Tunnel, then take a bite out of the Big Apple!
