In North Carolina, a 17-year-old is not automatically emancipated. The age of majority is 18. However, North Carolina allows minors aged 16+ to petition for judicial emancipation if they can prove financial independence, stable housing, and maturity. Without a court order, parents remain legally responsible, and the minor cannot sign binding contracts (leases, loans, etc.).
If family conflict is the driver, consider mediation, counseling, or contacting DSS for support before pursuing emancipation.
