The months of January, February and March are typically the busiest time of the year due to northern travelers escaping the winter weather. This time of year is also the most expensive with airfare and resort costs at the highest. Late spring through summer is the moderate season with moderate to low costs and crowds. September though the end of the year is the low season due to hurricane risks and is often the best value.
The nations of the Caribbean all have different currencies that must be contended with while traveling. Although most businesses and vendors accept American money, it is best to convert some of your money to take advantage of the exchange rates. Always ask businesses if they return change in American money because many times they will give you change in their currency. Compare exchange rates at several places before changing your money because the airport, hotel and banks usually all have different rates.
The warm tropical climate of the Caribbean allows visitors to wear beach attire year around. When packing for a Caribbean vacation, bring plenty of shorts, short sleeve shirts and bathing suits as these offer the most comfort in the hot and humid climate. For resort travelers it is advised to bring at least one set of formal clothing as many restaurants require proper dress to enter.
The Caribbean is home to a variety of cultural cuisines that utilize the tropical fruit, fresh seafood and incorporate international flavors. For Western travelers, the water in most Caribbean nations contains impurities that can cause adverse effects so it is best to drink only bottled water. Many resorts use treated water to cook with, but be careful when dining outside of the resorts as most restaurants use tap water.
