Kruger National Park Rules

South Africa's Kruger National Park offers the opportunity to spot plenty of wildlife as long as you obey the park's rules meant to protect both you and the wildlife. Formed in 1894, the park offers more than 1,500 miles of maintained roads that take you to areas where giraffes, elephants, zebras, lions, leopards and herds of buffalo roam freely. For the best viewing, head to the park in November and December, when the animals give birth to their young.
  1. Road Rules

    • All visitors to the Park must remain inside vehicles unless you're in a designated area that allows you to get out. No part of your body can protrude from a window or sunroof while on the road. Keep your vehicle's doors shut at all times. Visitors are not allowed to drive off-road or on roads with a sign indicating no entry. Obey all speed limits, keeping in mind that 50 km per hour is allowed on tar roads. Drive 40 km per hour on gravel roads. In the campgrounds, restrict your speed to 20 km per hour.

    Vehicle Restrictions

    • Vehicles exceeding 4000 kg as well as buses or vehicles with more than 25 seats must remain on tar roads. The use of roller skates and rollerblades is prohibited in all areas of the park, including the campgrounds. Bicycles and motorbikes are also prohibited in all areas of the park.

    Accommodations and Noise Restrictions

    • All visitors staying overnight in the park must stay at a booked and officially recognized overnight facility. These facilities include rest camps, bushveld camps and bush lodges. Before heading to your campsite or room, check in first with reception. Make sure you arrive at the campground by the time indicated on your gate permit. If you arrive late, you may be subject to a fine. You can occupy rooms or campsites starting at 2 p.m. on the day of your arrival. You must vacate your accommodations by 10 a.m. on the day you depart. The park enforces a strict noise policy with quiet hours between 9:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. Cell phones may only be used in the campgrounds, at the gates or in cases of emergency.

    Veterinary Rules

    • Since the park houses the Office of the State Veterinarian, you may not bring any domestic or wild animal into or out of the park. No pets are allowed in the park.
