How to Enjoy Kuta, Bali

Kuta is the single largest tourist destination on the Indonesian island of Bali. It is the magnet for surfers and partying backpackers across Indonesia, as well as being the equivalent of Cancun on spring break for Australians. While Kuta has much to offer visitors, it also has its hassles and difficulties, making a guide essential in steering your way to fun in the sun and surf there.

Instructions

    • 1

Get to Kuta. Kuta is right next to Bali's airport in Denpasar, only 10 minutes away by taxi. It would, perhaps, be more appropriate to call it "Denpasar-Kuta International Airport."

    • 2

Go surfing. Kuta's beach is a surfing beach, and attracts a plethora of Australian surfers, as well as people of other nationalities who want to be Australian surf rats from around the world. If you are looking to snorkel or dive, you need to be in another part of Bali, because it's all "surfs up" in Kuta. So, whether it be with a surf board, boogie board, or your body, go surfing. If you want to learn how to surf, surfing classes are widely available. Kuta is actually a very good place to learn to surf. The classes are cheap, the waves moderate and reliable, and the area is sandy and free of rocks and corals.

    • 3

Go party. Kuta is famous (or infamous) for its bar and club scene. You can find the main party strip on Jalan Legian between the alleyways of Poppies 1 and 2.

    • 4

Hire a taxi or rent a motor scooter and take day trips. Some ideas for a day trip are: the cliffside temple at Uluwatu, only 90 minutes from Kuta; visit the pleasant fishing island of Jimbaran; and surf the volcanic black sand beaches of Canggu, located beyond Seminyak.
