Sydney, Australia, derives its name from Lord Sydney, the British Home Secretary in the 1780s. When the First Fleet carrying British convicts arrived at Botany Bay in 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip deemed the site unsuitable and moved the settlement north to Port Jackson. There, he established the colony and named it Sydney in honor of Lord Sydney.
