Travel from Ontario to Alberta: No Direct Road
Ontario to Alberta: You Cannot Drive Directly
There is no continuous road link between Ontario and Alberta through Canada's north. The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) runs through the US (via Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana) or requires a ferry/rail segment in the north.
Practical Options
- Fly: Toronto (YYZ) → Calgary (YYC) or Edmonton (YEG): ~4.5 hours.
- Drive via USA: ~2,100 km (1,300 mi), ~22+ hours (ON → MN → ND → MT → AB). Requires passport/ESTA.
- Train: VIA Rail "The Canadian" (Toronto → Vancouver, 4 nights), then connect to Alberta.
Flying is standard for this 2,700+ km interprovincial journey.
