How Nova Scotia got its name?

There are two main theories about how Nova Scotia got its name.

1. The Italian Theory:

This theory suggests that the name Nova Scotia comes from the Latin words "Nova" meaning new and "Scotia" meaning Scotland. It is believed that Italian explorer John Cabot, who is credited with discovering North America in 1497, named the region Nova Scotia because it reminded him of the hills of Scotland.

2. The Gaelic Theory:

This theory proposes that the name originated from the Scottish Gaelic words "Alba Nuadh," meaning New Scotland. Scottish settlers who arrived in the area in the 17th century may have named the region after their homeland, drawing parallels between the geography and climate of Nova Scotia and Scotland.

While both theories are plausible, the Italian Theory is more widely accepted as the origin of the name Nova Scotia.
