Why does central Maharashtra have only a light rainfall?

The central region of Maharashtra in India does not receive much rainfall because it lies in a rain shadow zone created by the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats are a mountain range that runs along the western coast of India. As prevailing rain-bearing winds from the Arabian Sea blow towards India, they rise and cool as they cross the Western Ghats. This causes them to release most of their moisture as rainfall on the windward side (western slopes) of the mountains. As the winds descend on the eastern side (leeward slopes) of the Western Ghats, they are drier and carry less moisture, resulting in significantly reduced rainfall in central Maharashtra and the Deccan Plateau region.
