Serbia: A Sovereign State, Not a City

Serbia is a sovereign nation-state in southeastern Europe's Balkan Peninsula—not a city. Its capital and largest city is Belgrade (Beograd), a historic metropolis at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers with a population of approximately 1.4 million.

Serbia emerged as an independent state in 2006 following the dissolution of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, itself the successor to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The country spans 34,116 square miles (88,361 km²) and has roughly 6.7 million inhabitants.

Key facts about Serbia:

  • Government: Parliamentary republic
  • Official language: Serbian (Cyrillic and Latin scripts)
  • Currency: Serbian dinar (RSD)
  • Major cities beyond Belgrade: Novi Sad, Niš, Kragujevac
  • Geography: Pannonian Plain in the north, mountains and hills in the south

The confusion sometimes arises because "Serbia" and "Belgrade" are often mentioned together in news and history, but they're distinctly different: one is a country, the other its primary urban center.
