Goals of the Congress of Vienna (1814–1815)
The Congress aimed to restructure post-Napoleonic Europe:
- Restore peace and stability after 23 years of war.
- Redraw borders via legitimacy (restore monarchs), balance of power (prevent hegemony), and compensation (reward victors).
- Create a durable peace settlement.
- Establish the Concert of Europe—regular great-power consultation.
- Suppress revolutionary/liberal movements.
- Promote economic recovery and legitimate trade.
- Contain France (buffer states) and check Russian expansion.
- Encourage constitutional monarchies where feasible (limited).
It delivered nearly a century of general European peace (until 1914).
