American-Style Restaurants in Paris

The excellence of Parisian cuisine is legendary. However, for a homesick American abroad, sometimes there is nothing like the taste of home. Fortunately, because of the high number of Americans that live in Paris (around 50,000 according to Understanding France.org), and the legions of American tourists that pass through the city, there are plenty of American-style restaurants to visit when you want to bite into something familiar and comforting.
  1. Breakfast in America

    • Sometimes croissants for breakfast just don't cut it. Breakfast in America (BIA) is the place to go when you're longing for a classic American breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, waffles, bacon or French toast. Opened in 2003 by American Craig Carlson, there are now three BIAs in Paris. The restaurants are fashioned in American diner style with booths and stools. If you happen to be in Paris at Thanksgiving, the BIA location near the Sorbonne serves Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie.

    Joe Allen

    • Joe Allen's "New York-style" restaurant has been serving up burgers, spare ribs, chili, buffalo wings, and other American foods at Les Halles since 1972. The interior of the restaurant couldn't be less like a French café: it's a generous space with large wooden tables and round-back chairs, and a jukebox that plays American hits. Joe Allen also observes American holidays and events, and offers traditional fare on the 4th of July, Halloween and Thanksgiving.

    Thanksgiving

    • Thanksgiving is a Cajun restaurant in the Marais district that is open to the public only two days per week. Every Saturday and Sunday, the restaurant serves a Louisiana-style brunch that features Cajun Boudin Blanc, Jambalaya, and their specialty, Eggs Bayou (artichoke hearts stuffed with Crawfish topped with poached eggs). Until recently, the restaurant was open daily for dinner as well, but now only serves dinner by reservation to private parties of 15 or more.

    Doobies

    • Nothing says "American-style" more than the words "all you can eat." So, even though Doobies isn't technically an American restaurant (it serves Thai food during the week) the all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch is All-American. Make sure you're hungry when you go because they've got every kind of delicious brunch food you can think of: scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, crêpes, croissants, tabouli salad, caprese, assorted cheeses, desserts and much more. After brunch, you can burn off the calories you've consumed by doing a little sightseeing on Champs-Elysees, which is only steps away.

    Hard Rock Café

    • Hard Rock Café is the classic American-style restaurant, and the one in Paris's Left Bank that does not differ greatly from any of the others in the world. Designed to resemble an enormous diner, the restaurant has 21 television screens, hundreds of pieces of American rock memorabilia, and a well-stocked cocktail bar. In addition to the usual hamburgers and fries, you can satisfy your cravings for stuffed potato skins, BBQ or Tex-Mex here.
