Who is Alan Garcia Perez?

Alan García Pérez (May 23, 1949 – April 17, 2019) was a Peruvian lawyer and politician who served twice as President of Peru, from 1985 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2011. He was the founder and leader of the Peruvian Aprista Party (APRA).

García was born in Lima to a middle-class family. He studied law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and later became a professor of constitutional law. He entered politics in the 1970s and was elected to the Peruvian Chamber of Deputies in 1978.

In 1985, García was elected President of Peru at the age of 36. He implemented a number of economic reforms, including the nationalization of banks and the imposition of price controls. These policies led to hyperinflation and a severe economic crisis. García also faced a growing insurgency by the Shining Path guerrillas.

In 1990, García was defeated in the presidential election by Alberto Fujimori. He went into exile in Colombia and France. He returned to Peru in 2001 and was elected President again in 2006.

During his second term, García oversaw a period of economic growth and stability. He also implemented a number of social programs, including the creation of a national health insurance system. However, he was also criticized for corruption and for his handling of the Baguazo massacre in 2009.

García died on April 17, 2019, at the age of 69. He had been under investigation for corruption charges and was facing the prospect of being arrested.
