Famous Lakes Near Mexico City: Texcoco, Zumpango, Xochimilco

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) sits in the Valley of Mexico. There are no significant natural lakes within the modern city limits due to historic drainage and urbanization.

However, several famous lakes surround the metropolitan area or are remnants of the ancient lake system:

• Lake Texcoco: Mostly drained; site of the new Felipe Ángeles Airport and ecological restoration projects.
• Lake Zumpango: North of the city; important wetland and bird habitat.
• Lake Xochimilco: Famous for its chinampas (floating gardens) and trajineras (colorful boats); UNESCO World Heritage site.

These lakes are vestiges of the vast Lake Texcoco system that once filled the valley.
