Las Vegas Is in Nevada, Not California

Las Vegas is a major city in the state of Nevada, not California. The name comes from Spanish las vegas, meaning "the meadows," referencing the artesian springs and grassy meadows once found along Las Vegas Creek. The city lies in the Mojave Desert, near the borders of California, Arizona, and Utah.
