Chile: The World's Longest and Narrowest Country
Yes. Chile holds the record for the highest length-to-width ratio of any sovereign state.
Dimensions
- Length (N–S): 4,329 km (2,690 mi) — from Visviri (Peru/Bolivia tripoint) to Diego Ramírez Islands (Drake Passage)
- Average width (E–W): 175 km (109 mi)
- Maximum width: 355 km (221 mi) at Antofagasta latitude
- Minimum width: 90 km (56 mi) at Puerto Natales latitude
- Length:width ratio: ~25:1
Geographic Causes
Chile is sandwiched between the Andes (east) and the Pacific Ocean (west). The subduction zone creates the mountain barrier and the narrow coastal strip. No other country spans so many latitudes (17°–56°S) while remaining so narrow.
Consequences
- Climate extremes: Atacama Desert (driest) → Mediterranean → Temperate rainforest → Subpolar
- Transport challenges: North–south connectivity only; east–west crossing requires Andes passes
- Biodiversity: High endemism due to isolation
- Governance: Centralized from Santiago; regional disparities
Argentina is longer N–S if including Antarctic claim, but not sovereign territory. Chile's continental width is uniquely constrained.
