Why did the US support rebel groups to declare their independence from Colombia and form country of Panama?

The United States did not support any rebel groups seeking independence from Colombia. Panama had been separated from Colombia after negotiations between representatives of Colombia and the United States. They created a treaty known as the Hay–Herrán Treaty.
