What incentive is there for slaves to side with Santa Anna and the Mexican army?
Slaves had little incentive to side with Santa Anna and the Mexican army. In fact, many slaves fought on the side of the Texan rebels, hoping to gain their freedom by doing so. Santa Anna's government had also abolished slavery in 1829, although enforcement of this law was inconsistent. Nevertheless, it showed that the Mexican republic was not committed to protecting slavery, making it a risky proposition for slaves to align themselves with Santa Anna.
