Punta Allen is located at the tip of Boca Paila Peninsula that is part of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is about 90 miles south of Cancun, Mexico.
The closest city with an airport is Cancun. The best way to get to Punta Allen is to rent a 4-wheeler from Cancun and drive. The trip takes about two hours. Your other option is to take a bus to Tulum and then continue with a cab or combi. The combi leaves daily around 11 a.m. from the Tulum bus station and daily around 5 a.m from Punta Allen. Some hotels in Punta Allen will also pick you up from Cancun if you book accommodations beforehand.
It only takes an hour to walk around the town, so unless you booked beforehand, you can check all the hotels before choosing the one you like. All the hotels offer clean cabanas either on the beach or close to it.
Punta Allen has four restaurants on the beach with almost the same menu---lobster or fish fillet with rice, beans and a salad. Two other restaurants are located closer to the entrance to Punta Allen and they also serve seafood. All the seafood is caught daily by the fishermen of Punta Allen. In addition, Punta Allen has several mini-markets and a bakery close to the town clinic.
Punta Allen is famous among fly fishers and the local fishermen are happy to take you out. You can also arrange a manatee tour with them, and most of the time the tour includes snorkeling and swimming on uninhabited sand islands. Punta Allen is located in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reservation area, giving you a chance to see unspoiled nature and local flora and fauna in their natural habitat. You can also enjoy the secluded beaches and crystal-clear waters outside the fuss and buzz of Cancun. Punta Allen is also a location for ancient Maya ruins.
