With some of the most pristine beaches in Mexico, it's no secret that Ixtapa Zihuatanejo's main attraction is the water. The area boasts more than a half dozen beaches and miles of coastline perfect for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and surfing.
At a mile long, Playa La Ropa is the area's main beach. The waves here are calm, and the water is perfect for swimming. But if it's snorkeling or surfing you've set out to do, then visit Playa Las Gatas, which features a reef with tropical fish and a variety of aquatic life. If you're at Playa Las Gatas, also check out the nearby Owen Lee's Beach Club, a nature preserve.
Downtown Zihuatanejo is home to La Playa Municipal, where you'll see fishing boats and can enjoy a waterfront walkway with shopping and dining options. Another great place to watch boats is the marina in Ixtapa, which often holds as many as 100 yachts.
If you're itching to go on an adventure in the water, then consider an afternoon of parasailing, waterskiing or Jet Skiing. Scuba diving is also a popular activity in the area. Beginners and experts can enjoy more than 30 underwater diving sites.
The Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area is home to several tour and adventure companies that offer a plethora of options, from sunset cruises to horseback riding and kayaking. Jaguar Adventure Tours offers a zip line canopy tour, which takes you coasting above the treeline while strapped into a harness. Along with thrills, you'll take in excellent views of wildlife and scenery.
For a romantic getaway, hop aboard Magical Sunset Cruises and enjoy live music, an open bar and great sunset views from the water.
Off the water, there's lot to do, too. The yoga enthusiast can take a class at Paty's Marimar Restaurant. Classes are held on the upstairs terrace, with views of the water. The golfer of the family will be busy as well because Ixtapa Zihuatanejo has two famous courses: Club de Golf Palma Real Ixtapa and Club de Golf La Marina.
If you can peel yourself away from the waves and the sun, downtown Zihuatanejo is a place to experience old-world Mexican culture. This quaint fishing village features cobblestone streets lined with authentic restaurants and shops. Spend an afternoon browsing the town's stores, which sell an array of jewelry and local goods. Be sure to stop in to one of the town's cafes for some authentic fare.
Outside of town, the area's beach villages offer another taste of local culture. For fresh seafood, visit one of the many restaurants on Playa Las Gatas. For a diverse collection of eateries, visit Playa La Ropa. Here, you can find a range of restaurants that fit into all budgets and tastes, whether its fine dining or authentic Mexican fare you're craving.
